Travel Tales: What I Wore in Mexico

Beginning

Before I dive into the main article, I thought I would give you all a quick update on my life. My freshman year at the University of Minnesota has finally finished and summer has begun. I’ve spent the past two weeks traveling to Mexico and Washington, which may explain my extended absence from this blog. Along with traveling, I’ve also been working hard on some very exciting projects. Although I can’t disclose too much information right now, you can follow my progress on Instagram, @imhamyhuynh! Now, let’s get started~

In an attempt to escape Minneapolis’ sudden cold and rainy weather, my family and I spent a short five days in Playa Del Carmen. Although this was my third time traveling to Mexico, I was really excited to finally stay at a resort that was off of the main strip in Cancun. The entire week’s forecast was set to be in the high 80’s with lots of sun, truly a treat for Minnesotans! The warm weather meant I was trading my high-waisted jeans and lightweight jackets for maxi dresses and sandals…I couldn’t wait! In preparation for the trip, I went through my entire closet and dug up some clothes that I hadn’t worn in years. I thought I could find ways to make these clothes new again by revamping how I wear them as well as going to a local thrift store to get some new additional items. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many good things!

Outfit 1

This first outfit was created with a mixture of clothes that I already had and some accessories from the thrift store. The crop top and skirt were both from Forever21. I had bought these items about 4 years ago, but never got much usage out of them. The skirt is originally a high-low cut, but I opted to wear it as a wrap skirt by pulling the front together and tying a little knot. The knot completely changed up the look of my skirt and even created a side slit, which I absolutely adore! My sandals are from a local thrift store costing me around $12. If you would like to recreate this look, I’ll leave links to a similar maxi skirt and top here.

In this second outfit, I’m wearing a maxi dress that I picked up from Opitz Outlet. When I saw this dress, it was love at first sight. I adored the simple floral pattern, summer colors, and the halter cut of the dress. After looking at the tag, I discovered that it was from the brand GUESS. I did a bit of research online and found that this dress is called the ‘Floral Halter Maxi Dress‘ and retails at $118. At Opitz Outlet, this dress was completely new with tags and I purchased it for only $20! This exact dress is currently sold out on the GUESS website, but I’ll leave the link to a similar dress here.

I saw this jumpsuit on a rack at my favorite thrift store in Minneapolis, Annex. This ‘Meadow Rue Jumpsuit’ from the brand Free People, originally retails for $168. At Annex, I purchased it for a fraction of the price, around $16! I wore this outfit to dinner one night, and was stopped by a lady sitting at a nearby table who showered me with compliments. Overall, this is definitely my proudest thrifting find! If you would like to purchase it for yourself, I’ll leave the link here.

That’s it for today’s post! After seeing my Instagram photos from Mexico, I received questions from many of you asking where you can get these pieces. I hope that I’ve answered your questions through this article! If you have any additional questions about thrift shopping or styling clothes for certain occasions, feel free to contact me.
